To The Moon with Astrolab!
I have a commissioned art piece going to the moon in 2026 on Astrolab's Flip rover. This are piece was created in collaboration with Starborn Academy's and the Letters to the Moon project. In 8 one-hour lessons, students develop hands-on coding skills as they create a digital time capsule destined for the Moon. Their work will launch to the Moon's surface as part of an upcoming NASA CLPS mission. In the Starborn Academy 8-lesson curriculum, students embark on an immersive journey combining space exploration and coding. They begin by researching lunar history and creating a Message to the Future time capsule. Next, they draft an essay predicting life on the Moon 50 years from now.
I took these student messages and turned them into a word cloud art piece using 25 of the top words used in the student essays. The artwork turned into a space patch by A-B Emblem, the official patch maker for NASA.
The Flip rover mission will be historic in that it's carrying the first patches to return to the Moon since the Apollo astronauts stepped foot on the lunar surface!
